Kilimanjaro, Tanzania's highest peak and the world's tallest freestanding mountain, dominates the landscape like no other. At 5895 meters, it is Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest freestanding mountain. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a fantastic challenge that is perfectly doable for the energetic traveller or keen hiker searching for a new adventure. In just a few days, you'll climb Kilimanjaro from Africa's scorching plains to snow and ice, passing through grasslands, tropical rain forests, alpine meadows, moorlands, and desert uplands.
Route of Lemosho:
The Lemosho begins on Mount Kilimanjaro's western flank. It is best hiked over a 7 or 8-day period and provides excellent acclimatization. The Lemosho is one of our favorite routes on Kilimanjaro, thanks to its high summit success rates and beautiful views.
Route Machame:
The Machame begins in the south-west, at a lower elevation than the Lemosho. It's usually done in six or seven days, with the latter providing better acclimatization and a higher summit success rate. It's picturesque, like the Lemosho, and a nice path to take.
Route of Marangu:
The only route with hut accommodation is the Marangu. It is the most popular route because it is shorter and less expensive than others. However, the success rate is rather modest. If you're thinking of going to Marangu, make sure you pick the 6-day itinerary (not the 5-day).
Northern Circuit (Northern Circuit):
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's longest and quietest circuit. The path begins on the Lemosho before traversing the mountain's north flank and approaching Uhuru Peak via Gilman's Point. If you have the time and money, and want to avoid the more popular trails, this is an excellent option.
Route Rongai:
The Rongai is the only route that starts from the Kenyan border in the north. The trek provides some of the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro from a low vantage point. It's also a terrific alternative if you're only able to climb during the wet season because the north is usually dry.
