Lusaka, Zambia's capital and largest city, with a population of over 3 million people. It is one of Southern Africa's fastest growing cities. Its downtown streets are crowded with street vendors, and the skyline is sparsely populated. Despite the fact that the economy is improving, the city still has a high unemployment rate. Lusaka's business district is fairly modern, but its surroundings are dotted with scrambling shanties and bustling markets.
While many visitors to Zambia don't spend much time in the capital, you might find yourself spending a few days there.
There is lots to see and do in and around the city for visitors. The Lusaka National Museum, art galleries with a focus on local artists, the Lusaka Playhouse theatre, the Kabwata Cultural Village, and the Moore Pottery Factory are all worthwhile stops in the city. Local artists have a vibrant culture in the city, and many of their works are for sale.
Water slides, paintballing, and swimming pools are among the activities available at Adventure City.
The Nembo Scenic Park, located about 11 kilometers from the city center, is a scale model of Zambia's map that spans a 47 000 square meter area. Lakes and waterfalls abound throughout the park, making it an ideal spot for a family ramble.
The Kalimba Reptile Park offers an amazing collection of snakes, tortoises, chameleons, crocodiles, and other reptiles from the area as well as the rest of Africa. It's a fun spot to visit with the whole family, and there's even a playground for the kids. It has a cool veranda where refreshments are served, as well as a putt-putt course, and is set in a verdant garden.
Monkey Pools is located on the Mukamunya Estate and provides a lovely adventure for swimming and playing in the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Mukamunya River's source. The grounds are stunning, with jungle-like forests that make for a great picnic area for a day out. They can be found when the tar road ends on Leopards Hill Rd. Take the left fork on the road and keep an eye out for the signage.
